A Little About Melanie

Melanie Patterson, teacher and creator of Sunflower Story Garden

Melanie Patterson creates stories and practical resources that invite parents and teachers to bring warmth, imagination, and wonder into the lives of young children.

Drawn to the beautiful simplicity of Waldorf storytelling and puppetry, Melanie treasures the way a wise tale can become a seed that awakens the imagination and spirit of children and parents alike. Through beloved, recurring characters, she weaves traditional folk tales and fables into a shared story world. This approach also grows from a practical teaching need: a familiar cast of puppets allows many stories to unfold while easing the work of the puppet maker.

The living rhythm of the seasons runs through her Sunflower Story Garden curriculum. It introduces a holistic approach to early-childhood science through seasonal storytelling, nature study, outdoor activities, imaginative play, circle-time movement verses, handwork, and artistic expression. Rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s Waldorf educational approach, these experiences nurture children’s unfolding relationship with the natural world.

Her four collections of curriculum material include stories, companion lesson guides, puppet plays, and oral storytelling adaptations for every week of the year, including summer. In A Beginner’s Guide to Waldorf Puppetry, she welcomes adults into this gentle art with an encouraging invitation: a small beginning is enough.

Since 2007, Melanie’s experience spans teaching in traditional public-school and Waldorf classrooms, homeschooling, and leading Waldorf-inspired homeschool co-ops.
